They can arise from intrinsic characteristics of the eye, eye movements, OCTA image acquisition, image processing and display strategies. Since OCTA is a light source-dependent technology, artifacts are very common and can lead to incorrect interpretations of OCTA images. Thus, it allows deeper penetration into the tissue of 3 mm (compared to 2 mm), with the compromise of a slightly lower axial resolution of 6,3 µm (compared to 5 µm, personal communication with Zeiss). The newer generations, on the other hand, apply swept-source OCT (SS-OCT) technology, which uses a longer wavelength of nearly 1050 nm (compared to 840 nm in SD-OCT) and a higher scan speed of 100,000 A-scans/s (compared to 68,000 A-scans/s). In the older-generation units, light is emitted by a spectral domain OCT (SD-OCT) with a wavelength of nearly 840 nm near the infrared range. Since this technology’s introduction in 2014, OCTA has developed rapidly and there are currently several generations of OCTA from different companies available. Briefly, OCTA technology employs motion contrast to image blood flow and thereby vessels through different segmented areas in the eye, thus eliminating the need for intravascular dyes. While conventional imaging techniques such as fluorescein and indocyanine green angiography can only partially depict the CC, optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) enables us to assess and quantify the CC blood flow. Changes in CC blood flow are known to occur physiologically with increasing age and are associated with a variety of chorioretinal diseases such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC). The choriocapillaris (CC) is a few-µm-thin layer of capillaries of relatively large diameter located in the inner aspect of the choroid below the retinal pigmented epithelium (RPE). In this study, we describe the presence of SRF as an important shadow-causing artifact source for CC OCTA analysis which can be mitigated but not completely eliminated by employing SS-OCTA. Understanding OCTA artifacts is critical to ensure accurate clinical evaluations. Despite this significant attenuation of signal voids, SS-OCTA continued to reveal signal voids below SRF and more pixels with reduced OCTA signals in CSC patients compared to controls (7.6% ± 6.3%, 0.1% ± 0.1%, p < 0.0001). Compared to SD-OCTA, SS-OCTA delivered a more homogenous OCTA signal and reduced signal voids in the CC underneath SRF in both RD and CSC (CSC, 7.6% ± 6.3% vs, 19.7% ± 9.6%, p < 0.01). In CCS, the voids were predominantly located in the area with SRF. Both devices demonstrated CC signal voids in CSC and RD, respectively. SS-OCTA yielded a more homogeneous OCTA signal from the CC than SD-OCTA, offering less signal dispersion and variability in healthy and diseased eyes. To investigate the influence of SRF on CC OCTA signal, the extent of SRF was quantified with a macular heatmap and compared with the corresponding OCTA signal of the CC. Abnormal CC decorrelation signals were quantitatively compared in CSC and controls by means of custom image processing. Ten patients with acute central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC), three patients with partial macular-off retinal detachment (RD) and ten healthy, age-matched controls were included. This is a prospective case-control study of 23 eyes. To characterize the choriocapillaris (CC) structure in relation to subretinal fluid (SRF) as a possible systematic error source using spectral domain (SD-OCTA) compared to swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography (SS-OCTA). The major difference between a Japanese multi-purpose knife and its European version, a French or a German knife, is in a thinner blade. Side knife, a woodworking tool resembling a cleaver.Japanese version of a Western-style main kitchen knife (chef's knife). In Japanese cutlery, the main cleaver used is the light-duty deba bōchō, primarily for cutting the head off fish. įor butchering tasks and to prepare boned meats, there is a heavier Chinese "cleaver", used in similar fashion to the Western one. However Chinese chef knives are much thinner in cross-section and are intended more as general-purpose kitchen knives, and mostly used to slice boneless meats, chop, slice, dice, or mince vegetables, and to flatten garlic bulbs or ginger while also serving as a spatula to carry prepared ingredients to the wok. The Chinese chef's knife is frequently incorrectly referred to as a "cleaver", due its similar rectangular shape. In explaining his ideal of junzi, Kǒng Fūzǐ remarked "Why use an ox-cleaver to carve a chicken?" on the futility of the common people seeking to emulate noblemen. When asked how he did so, he replied that he did not cut through the bones, but rather in the space between the bones. Cleavers can also be used in preparation of hard vegetables and other foods, such as squash, where a thin slicing blade runs the risk of shattering.Ĭleavers are not used for cutting through solid, thick and hard bones – instead a bone saw, either manual or powered, is used.Ĭleavers occur with some frequency in traditional Chinese thought.Ī story from the Zhuangzi on the proper use of a cleaver tells of a butcher who effortlessly cut ox carcasses apart, without ever needing to sharpen his cleaver. With a chicken, for example, it can be used to chop through the bird's thin bones or to separate ribs. Use Ĭleavers are primarily used for cutting through thin or soft bones and sinew. A butcher does not typically lay them flat, as the blade may dull or get damaged. Some cleavers have a small hole, at the top front corner, for hanging them on a wall. The tough metal and thick blade of a cleaver also make it a suitable tool for crushing with the side of the blade, whereas some hard, thin slicing knives could crack under such repeated stress. The grind for a meat cleaver, at approximately 25°, is much blunter than for other kitchen knives. Because of this, the edge of a meat cleaver does not need to be particularly sharp – in fact, a knife-sharp edge on a cleaver is undesirable. Part of the momentum derives from how hard the user swings the cleaver, and the other part from how heavy the cleaver is. In use, it is swung like a meat tenderizer or hammer – the knife's design relies on sheer momentum to cut efficiently to chop straight through rather than slicing in a sawing motion. This resilience is accomplished by using a softer, tougher steel and a thicker blade, because a harder steel or thinner blade might fracture or buckle under hard use. In contrast to other kitchen knives, the cleaver has an especially tough edge meant to withstand repeated blows directly into thick meat, dense cartilage, bone, and the cutting board below. "Cleaver" was commonly spelled clever in the late 17th century. Tools described as cleavers have been in use since the Acheulean period. The knife's broad side can also be used for crushing in food preparation (such as garlic) and can also be used to scoop up chopped items. It is largely used as a kitchen or butcher knife and is mostly intended for splitting up large pieces of soft bones and slashing through thick pieces of meat. Michelle Rodriguez is back in this movie as Letty. My first approach to the studio - to give you perspective of how deep I was thinking about this trilogy - I went to the studio and said: “Let’s do 4, 5, and 6 together.” After we did 4, I said: “Let’s do 5 and 6 together.” After we did 5, I said: “Let’s do 6 and 7 together.” Now they’re getting the momentum, and they’re starting to feel comfortable in finally recognizing this as a saga, as opposed to a franchise that’s a brand that’s just rehashing, that puts the brand on the poster. And 6 was fleshed out while we were doing Fast 4. 6 is the conclusion of the second trilogy. To be accurate about Fast, you gotta look at it as two trilogies so far. GET EW ON YOUR TABLET: Subscribe today and get instant access! That approach is what made the difference, and took us from where we were with Tokyo Drift to tripling those numbers for Fast & Furious 4. In this new age of filmmaking, if the audience sees a movie, they want to carry that equity with them to the next movie. But that was the game, and that was the goal. If you didn’t have that, you’d be crazy to think that you could tell an episodic story. The only people in Hollywood that could do it were people that had the backing of previously-written novels. It was evident to me that the audience was kind of getting used to episodic storytelling. When I came back, they wanted me to be a producer. Take the brand, throw any story together, and sell the brand. After the first movie, they were still treating it the way Hollywood treated franchises in the ’80s and ’90s. If you notice the first three movies, they were fragmented, they were unconnected - which was part of the reason why I wasn’t keen on continuing the franchise in the early stages. There weren’t the various comic issues that the whole public could identify with. VIN DIESEL: The first thing to note is that that was once a curse: The fact that we didn’t have novels, we didn’t have stories that people would accept as a saga. What, to you, is the secret to the longevity of the franchise? It’s not a superhero movie or a fantasy saga. For our Fast & Furious 6 cover story, we talked to Diesel about Fast, Riddick, Facebook, and Hannibal the Conqueror.ĮNTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: The Fast films are very different from the other major blockbuster franchises this summer. In between then and now, though, Diesel became a social-media phenomenon and an action-hero comeback kid… and he still has his sights set on his long-in-the-works passion project about a certain Carthaginian General. There will never be another Riddick,’” says Diesel now. “Nine years ago, the studio said: ‘You will never make this movie again. Universal is distributing another Diesel movie this summer, featuring the actor’s other iconic character: Riddick arrives in theaters in September, 13 years after Pitch Black unexpectedly started the sci-fi franchise and nine years after the so-so box office for The Chronicles of Riddick appeared to end it. ( Fast & Furious 7 is already slated for a 2014 release.) It’s opening on Memorial Day, and Universal is bullish on its box office prospects. His most famous character - soulful auto-outlaw Dominic Toretto - is returning to screens in Fast & Furious 6, which marks the long-running franchise’s return to the summer blockbuster season. In the same vein that Blade Runner became a cult classic when an improved version of the movie became available, Legend received a similar status and praise for doing the same.In 1985, director Ridley Scott‘s went deep into the world of phantasmagoric cinematic sci-fi fantasy with Legend, a bleak yet beautiful adventure film that has since emerged as a true cult-classic for Children of the 80s (and anyone who loves their sci-fi fantasy with a healthy dose of romance, elves, unicorns, a touch of Jim Henson and a synth-tastic soundtrack featuring Tangerine Dream, Bryan Ferry, and Jon Anderson). In the director's cut, the ideas about good and evil are consistently questioned as the protagonists are flawed individuals who make mistakes and may not be the pure embodiment of good, but will still rise to the occasion at the end of the day. evil story, the Legend director's cut provides a more morally gray narrative. Overall, while the theatrical cut provides a more clear-cut, good vs. The other big change is that the Legend director's cut uses the original Jerry Goldsmith score that was kept in for European audiences rather than the music by Tangerine Dream, Jon Anderson, and Brian Ferry that was in the US theatrical release (via Cinefantastique). There are two main differences between Legend's theatrical and director's cut, and the first is that the latter offers a more bittersweet ending in which Jack and Lili go their separate ways instead of riding off into the sunset. Similar to the multiple director's cuts that Blade Runner received, a big reason why Legend became a cult classic is the unrated Director's Cut released in 2002. A big reason why the movie had such great makeup effects is because of the involvement of makeup effects artist Rob Bottin, who is best known for his work on films like The Howling, Robocop, and The Thing. Several critics stated that Legend's visuals and makeup prosthetics alone were enough reasons to see it. Through a combination of the cinematography, set pieces, and most importantly the makeup effects, Legend was dazzling to look at. However, even the harshest critics cannot deny some admirable aspects of Legend as many of the positive reviews praise the film for its gorgeous visuals. a movie that has no clear idea of its own mission and no joy in its own accomplishment." (via ) Ebert's TV partner and fellow critic, Gene Siskel, was even harsher towards Scott's fantasy film, stating " I don't want to remember any more about Legend than to make sure I include it in my 'worst films of 1986' list and never rent it when it comes out as a video cassette." (via Chicago Tribune) Legend received mostly negative reviews, with criticisms of it being incoherent, messy, and overall lacking a sense of identity or purpose. When comparing different breeding schedules, be sure to account for seasonal differences in costs and availability of high quality forage in order to insure reasonably priced, good quality forage for the does during late pregnancy and lactation, and for recently weaned kids.įorage can be preserved either by drying (hay) or pickling (silage, haylage and baleage). Lactating does and growing kids have the highest nutritional demands in a herd. The cost and availability of high quality forage can vary from farm to farm and season to season. during wetter times of the year or when leaves drop in the fall). Brush pastures are a likely habitats for deer, putting goats at higher risk of neurological damage from deer worm infection, particularly when snails and slugs, the intermediate host of deer worm are numerous (i.e. If the goal is to sustain brush, wait to graze brush in the spring until the plants are completely leafed out and avoid grazing in the fall when goats are likely to girdle the bark. Browse plants take a long time to recover from grazing and may only be able to be grazed once or twice per year depending upon how much defoliation occurs at each grazing unless the goal is to eradicate the brush. However, the degree of loss is less than for conventional pasture species. The nutritional value of brush pastures will also decrease over the grazing season as the vegetation matures. To keep pastures from becoming mature too early in the grazing season, pastures can be bush-hogged or grazed in between the goat grazing intervals by other animal species such as cattle or horses that are not hosts to the same worms. Because of this, goat pastures may need to be rested longer between grazing intervals than is optimum for forage quality. Goats are very susceptible to stomach and intestinal worms. Keep in mind that the mature stems of legumes (alfalfa, clover, etc.) and “C4” grasses (Sudan, Johnson, etc.) tend to be more lignified and thus, poorer in nutrition, than the stems of cool season “C3” grasses (Timothy, Orchard, etc.). This can be done through wise pasture management and/or the harvesting of forages at sufficiently immature growth stages so that they consist chiefly of leaves and less mature, pliable stems as compared to mature, brittle stems. When concentrate prices are high, one of the best ways to keep feed costs down is to invest in quality of forages. High quality forage and many grain byproducts (soy hulls, wheat middlings, etc.) are potential sources of fermentable fiber for goats. As an aside, this strategy results in goats naturally choosing to include as part of their diet, the fruit and seeds (grain) borne at plant growing points, rather than naturally limiting themselves only to a "grassfed" diet.Ī healthy goat’s diet should provide sufficient high quality fiber readily fermented by rumen bacteria to maintain rumen health. Rather, goats have a mobile upper lip allowing them to selectively choose the most fermentable plant fiber, the growing points of plants instead of mature parts and the leaves of plants over the stems. Therefore, they are not able to convert the more lignified (i.e., lower quality) fiber found in mature plant stems into nutrients that can be used for energy. This means that goat rumen microorganisms do not have as much time to break down plant fiber. Furthermore, the passage of food through a small ruminant is faster than through large ruminants. Not all plant fiber is readily fermented by rumen microorganisms. Sindria Trading Company Top Consultant (former) father/uncle/deceased)įive unnamed princesses (stepsisters/cousins) Īnger claimed in Hollywood Babylon II that he played the Changeling Prince in the 1935 Warner Brothers film A Midsummer Night's Dream, but the character was played by a girl named Sheila Brown. Kenneth later said, "I was a child prodigy who never got smarter." He remembered attending the Santa Monica Cotillion, where he met Shirley Temple, with whom he once danced. He developed an early interest in film and enjoyed reading the movie tie-in Big Little books. Bertha encouraged his artistic interests and later moved into a house in Hollywood with another woman, Miss Diggy, who also encouraged Kenneth. It was she who first took Kenneth to the cinema, to see a double bill of The Singing Fool and Thunder Over Mexico. His grandmother Bertha was a strong influence on the young Kenneth and supported the family financially during the Great Depression. His brother Bob later claimed that as the youngest child, Kenneth had been spoiled by his mother and grandmother and became somewhat "bratty". Growing up, he did not get along with his parents or siblings. Kenneth Anger, their third and final child, was born in 1927. There Wilbur got a job as an electrical engineer at Douglas Aircraft, earning enough money that they could live comfortably as a middle-class family. That year they moved to Santa Monica to be near Lillian's mother, Bertha Coler, who had recently moved there. Anger's parents met at Ohio State University and after marrying had their first child, Jean Anglemyer, in 1918, followed by a second, Robert "Bob" Anglemyer, in 1921. His father, Wilbur Anglemyer, was of German ancestry and was born in Troy, Ohio, while his disabled mother, Lillian Coler (the older of the pair), had English ancestry. His family was Presbyterian, but he became more interested in the occult. Kenneth Anger was born as Kenneth Wilbur Anglemyer on February 3, 1927, in Santa Monica, California. Kinsey Today argued that Anger had "a profound impact on the work of many other filmmakers and artists, as well as on music video as an emergent art form using dream sequence, dance, fantasy, and narrative." Biography 1927–1936: Early life In the 2000s he returned to filmmaking, producing shorts for various film festivals and events.Īnger described filmmakers such as Auguste and Louis Lumière, Georges Méliès, and Maya Deren as influences, and was cited as an important influence on directors like Martin Scorsese, David Lynch, and John Waters. After failing to produce a sequel to Lucifer Rising, which he attempted through the mid-1980s, Anger retired from filmmaking, instead focusing on Hollywood Babylon II (1984). Getting to know several notable countercultural figures of the time, Anger involved them in his subsequent Thelemite-themed works, Invocation of My Demon Brother (1969) and Lucifer Rising (1972). The latter became infamous for various dubious and sensationalist claims, many of which were disproved, though some remain urban legends. in the early 1950s, Anger began work on several new projects, including the films Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome (1954), Scorpio Rising (1964), Kustom Kar Kommandos (1965), and the gossip book Hollywood Babylon (1965). Moving to Europe, Anger produced a number of shorts inspired by the avant-garde scene there, such as Eaux d'Artifice (1953) and Rabbit's Moon (1971). A friendship and working relationship subsequently began with pioneering sexologist Alfred Kinsey. The work's controversial nature led to his trial on obscenity charges, but he was acquitted. He began making short films when he was 14 years old, although his first film to gain any recognition was the homoerotic Fireworks (1947). Anger also explored occult themes in many of his films he was fascinated by the English occultist Aleister Crowley and an adherent of Thelema, the religion Crowley founded.īorn in a middle-class Presbyterian family in Santa Monica, California, Anger later claimed to have been a child actor who appeared in the film A Midsummer Night's Dream (1935) the accuracy of this claim is disputed. He has been called "one of America's first openly gay filmmakers", with several films released before homosexuality was legalized in the U.S. Anger's films variously merge surrealism with homoeroticism and the occult, and have been described as containing "elements of erotica, documentary, psychodrama, and spectacle". Working exclusively in short films, he produced almost 40 works beginning in 1937, nine of which have been grouped together as the "Magick Lantern Cycle". Sorry to "hijack" the thread to radio, but its an example of what is looming in the world of cable! It's already happening to us! Not many programs are available in privately-run syndication anymore! And, watch radio in the next few 's going to be a FIGHT over information and entertainment sources and formats. Or, is that they are "bought into".hmmmmĬable subscribers to what will be the "biggie" should definitely be at least concerned, if not scared. Our legislators seem to buy-in to the theory that big business is better. "Bigger is Better and Okay" is becoming dangerous, and it's a serious issue, not a "sky is falling" situation, either. Think of it! Your "big cable company of America' doesn't want you to see a certain side of news! They're big enough to bully the programming suppliers and not carry what they dislike, or carry ONLY WHAT THEY DO! How about emergencies? ONE BIG COMPANY gets damaged at a major backbone (or attacked somehow) and goes "down." It takes out MORE subscribers that NEED information (in that particular emergency) than when there our country had more companies vying for your business. This is very dangerous to radio, just as merging two (very) large cable companies is dangerous to subscribers. So, Network news, Features, Opinions you hear on the radio can be controlled as to location, market, and how and when they're heard by TWO large companies. I know! One of my stations was told, "NO, you may not keep updates from Yahoo Sports Radio (formerly Sporting News Radio-bought up by the bigger conglomerate) because they don't think we're worthy of carrying their updates (only) anymore, after being an affiliate for 5 years there, and about the same amount of time here. Then, there's Townsquare which bought Cumulus which owned Dial Global, (now back to being called Westwood One) a distributor of other very well known audio networks like CBS, NBC, and features like the Osgood Files and MUCH, much more.Įssentially we have TWO pipes of information to local (radio) affiliates, and choice is being choked. Premier Satellite Networks is a subsidiary of Clear Channel, the nation's bloated "giant" (radio) company that doesn't want to be called "radio" anymore, but they control WHO can have what THEY distribute through THEIR mainly-satellite platform. Now, take it one step farther, by using a different "media distribution" example.ĭo you listen to local radio? Think your local station is completely "independent?" Guess again! There are TWO major pipelines for most any of the syndicated shows and features out there. We live in a country run by legislators who think "bigger is better" and have, on their committees approved things that should have been left alone! If Verizon plans to throttle all streaming video, that would be different, but that’s not what’s happening. The flow of "general information" (and I'll lump-in entertainment services) into people's homes is definitely in danger. Specifically throttling the data speeds of Netflix or YouTube is simply not allowed, but that’s exactly what Verizon is doing. This may have just been a test, but it signals that Verizon is considering going back on that promise.įurthermore, as The Verge points out, this appears to be a clear violation of net neutrality rules, which require common carriers like Verizon to treat all traffic equally. Verizon was clearly testing a data cap, limiting users to 10Mbps when streaming video on Netflix and possibly on YouTube as well.Īs we explained previously, 1080p HD video can stream smoothly at these speeds, but as Ars Technica notes, Verizon made a big show of the fact that it doesn’t “manipulate the data” like T-Mobile does. The customer video experience was not affected.”Īs innocent as that statement sounds, it doesn’t reflect what Verizon customers were experienced when they tested their data speeds on Netflix’s speed test tool. “We’ve been doing network testing over the past few days to optimize the performance of video applications on our network. Here’s the statement that the two publications received on Friday regarding the data throttling: |
